Will it be difficult for us to live with the fact that there are no tigers left in the world? Or are we so busy with our lives that we just don't seem to care. I was not very surprised to read in the newspapers just a few days back that only 1,411 tigers survive in the wild in India today. The figures for the world population of tigers are also not very encouraging with only about 3,250 tigers left in the wild.

The tiger killing sport was enjoyed by kings in India about 300 years ago but at that time tigers were in abundance. The tiger population started to come down with the killing of tigers for entertainment. However tiger skin was also in great demand as a collectible item. The use of tiger claws and teeth in medicine in China is known to one and all. The moot point here is that non stop and irrational killing has led to this dreaded figure of less than 3,500 tigers in the wild.

The tiger, like any other creature plays a very crucial role in the ecosystem. Te most important role that it plays is to keep in check the population of deer and other animals alike. Hence it helps in maintaining a certain balance in the population of the ecosystem. The tiger is actually a very shy creature. It does not attack human beings. However there is an exception to this case in the form of the Sunderbans man eating tiger which may attack human beings as well. The tiger is a very graceful creature with amazing strength.

It is high time we do something for this amazing creature. You can create awareness by sharing information of tiger conservation with your friends. You can text and you can blog. You can let your thoughts run wild and suggest changes to the government. It is the duty of every citizen in India and the world by strongly opposing poaching. As the saying goes, "Kiliing stops when buying stops". Hence please don't buy any tiger products such as tiger skin, claws and teeth as this will lead to further dwindling of tiger population.

Our respect for all animals and plants should be profound. There are more and more people who are taking the vegetarian path and you can do the same. Just because we are the most powerful species on the planet does not mean that we unleash our destructive power to prove something to the world.

Please do your bit for the tiger. Write to the government to take stringent measures against the poachers and offenders. The only solution that might come to our mind before the tiger population becomes extinct is to maybe hang the poachers!! Only this drastic step could prove to be one step towards maintaining our tiger population.
