The Symbolism of Trees

Trees have always had very strong symbolic roots, whether they be in mythology, religion or philosophy. The tree of knowledge, the tree of life, and the tree of good and evil are amongst the most well known trees.

Generally speaking, trees represent growth, life, and simultaneously reaching up to the sky and down to the earth at the same time. Here is the symbolism behind five well known trees:

1. The willow:

Willow trees can be found around bodies of water such as swamps and streams. She offers protection against damp diseases. The willow also represents the female gift of fertility. Because of its connections to the moon, it is believed that willows can see through dreams and night visions. Weeping willow people are thought to be beautiful, melancholic, empathetic, dreamers, sufferers in love and honest.

2. Oak:

Oak trees represent power, protection, strength, prosperity, success and stability. The oak has a strong association with weather magic, they can weather all kinds of weather conditions including lightning. Oak people are courageous, independent, sensible, robust and don't love change. Even in moments of stress, an oak person keeps their feet on the ground, endures the pain and comes out stronger than they went in.

3. Reeds:

The reed symbolizes fertility, protection, love and family concerns. The reed is often associated with kingship and the male divinity. It is the tree of scribes. The reed has many purposes. The oil from its stems can be used to treat toothaches and remove parasites. The plant itself can be made into pens, mats or baskets. Reed people tend to be male, they are vibrant people. While their aristocratic attitudes don't jive with everyone, they are good carers.

4. Birch:

Birches are graceful, slender trees. The symbolism behind their shedding skin is that people should shed their old ways and adopt new ones with every new year. Birch people tend to have a calmness that is uplifting for others. Their attitude is clean, pure and spiritual. They are usually attractive, friendly, full of imagination, modest and vivacious.

5. Rowan:

The rowan has a long reputation of protection against enchantment. Rowan springs were hung over doorways and sheds to protect homes and animals. It symbolizes beauty, privacy, peace and refuge. Rowan people are full of charm and cheer, they draw a lot of attention, but are not egoists. They are artistic, passionate and independent.

So you see, everything in this world represents something. Even the leaves on the trees in the middle of the forest that we rarely see.
