The story of Atlas Model Trains is one of foresight, entrepreneurship, and hard work mixed with a love for the model railway pastime.

This resulted in the company growing larger than anyone had first imagined.

The business originally started back in the early 1900's, having nothing to do with model railways ... it was a tool company.

Stepahn Schaffan Jr went to work with his father, Stephan Schaffan Snr who was the founder of the business.

As the story goes, the paycheck Stephan Schaffan Jr was earning from his fathers company was inadequate to keep him happy.

After work, he would go home and spend his pastime time building model aircraft.

The neighboring airplane shop, close by, was a place he would repeatedly call in on.

In order to find a way to earn more income and follow his interests, he would repeatedly ask the owner of the shop for a part-time job, but the owner turned him down.

However, in the end the store owner got so tired of being pestered by Stephan he gave him some outworn model trains which he wasn't using anymore - in the anticipation that Stephan would leave him alone.

As it turned out, what in time became known as Atlas Model Trains, was a result of those old model railroad components which were so easily given away.

Stephan Jnr went to work on those old trains and being extremely inventive and creative, he designed a switch set which allowed the user to stop and start a locomotive by controlling the electrical current to the tracks.

The switch set went on to become a big part of Atlas Model Trains

Stephan Jnr went on to think up many more model railway products.

Eventually the model railway side of the company dwarfed the original tool division and the company's name was changed to Atlas Model Railroad ... known by most people as Atlas Model Trains.

Now, Stephan Jnr could focus on inventing other time saving technology for model railway enthusiasts.

Atlas Model Trains went on to become one of the biggest names in the model railway industry and today Stephan Jnrs legacy continues to serve model railway enthusiasts
