The recently released Sony Ericsson Vivaz boasts an impressive list of features. At the heart of these, and indeed its recent TV ad campaign, is the ability to record and play HD video. This is sure to appeal to tech savvy users, and this represents the latest advances in mobile phone technology.

At the heart of the Vivaz is an impressive 8 mega pixel camera. This operates at a pixel resolution of 3264x2448 offering the ability to take super high quality images. The task of taking images is made simple thanks to the inclusion of features such as autofocus and LED flash. HD video can be filmed thanks to the ability to shoot video in 720p quality at a rate of 24 frames per second.

In order to display HD video and images, the screen needs to be up to scratch. Measuring 3.2 inches, the TFT resistive touchscreen utilises pixels at a resolution of 360x640 to display up to 16 million colours. Additional features of the screen include accelerometer and handwriting recognition. The handset itself measures 107x51.7x12.5mm and weighs 97 grams. Its slim profile and light weight make the Vivaz a pleasure to hold and use on the move.

The Vivaz features an internal phonebook which can store a practically unlimited number of entries and fields and includes the popular and useful photocall feature. 75 MB of internal memory is provided for storage of data such as media files. In order to gain further storage, the micro SD slot can be utilised. Although a pre-installed 8GB memory card is present, this can be upgraded to up to 16GB.

As expected from any new mobile, users are alerted to incoming calls and messages via a combination of ringing and vibration. Users have the option to utilise MP3 music files as ringtones, allowing customisation of the phone. Options for handsfree talking include a speakerphone system and a 3.5mm audio jack which accommodates handsfree headsets.

An array of connectivity features allows the Vivaz to stay connected to the internet and to cellular networks. Initially, class 10 GPRS and EDGE connect the handset to cellular networks. In areas covered by 3G, HSDPA is available at speeds of up to 10.2 Mbps, along with HSUPA at 2 Mbps. Wi-Fi connectivity offers the chance to attain a faster internet connection by utilising the signals provided by local wireless internet routers. Bluetooth and USB offer additional connection options.

A long list of additional features ranges from social networking integration, to a versatile media player, along with a document reader and organiser.

Available in a selection of colours, the Sony Ericsson Vivaz looks set to be one of the major mobile phone releases of the year, and it's impressive spec list is sure to make this a popular handset.
