Released in November 2009, the Samsung i5700 Galaxy Spica was actually the first Android operated mobile phone to offer DivX playback. This is in addition to the impressive range of playback formats of this model's media player.

The i5700 measures 115x57x13.2mm and weighs in at 124g. The 3.2" TFT capacitive touchscreen is capable of displaying up to 16million colours at 328x480 pixels. An accelerometer is built into the handset which senses when it had been tilted and automatically rotates the image on screen so it can be viewed in both portrait and landscape forms.

Users are alerted to incoming calls and messages by vibration and ringing with the option to utilize MP3 and WAV music files as ringtones. A speakerphone is built in allowing hands free communication. A 3.5mm audio jack is provided which can accommodate hands free kits as well as headphones for listening to music.

180MB of internal storage is available, however a microSD slot is included on the handset which can accommodate up to 32GB of storage for media files, contact info and other files. A range of connectivity options allows users to stay connected. GPRS and EDGE connection are both available in Class 12 versions of each. Internet access is provided thanks to an HSDPA connection at speeds of up to 3.6Mbps. WiFi access allows users to take advantage of various hotspots located around the country. The i5700 is equipped with a camera boasting 3.15MP which operates at a pixel resolution of 2048x1536 pixels. Features of the camera include autofocus as well as the increasingly popular Geo-tagging facility. It also has the ability to record video as an alternative to taking still photographs.

As already mentioned, the i5700 has an impressive media player. Supported formats of music files are MP3, e-AAC+ and WMA. Video files in MP4, H.263, H.264, WMV and DivX formats are supported. Media files can easily be transferred to and from a computer by using the included USB (v2.0) port. A range of included applications include a digital compass, voice memo recorder, YouTube access, calendar as well as a range of Google features. These are Google search, Maps, Gmail and Google Talk integration. A range of games is included and the phone has GPS with A-GPS support.
