"To us, great theatre is about great plays, great performances and great nights out from the moment you step through the door." This is the motto of the performers who grace the stage of the Old Vic Theatre. With a history that spans over one and a half centuries, this stage has seen more drama, more tears, more laughter and some of the best talent the world has to offer within its walls. Changing names more times that can be counted, it was first established in 1818 by William Barrymore who was an actor; it was known as the Royal Coburg Theatre at that time. After Princess Victoria became heir to the throne it was named Royal Victorian Theatre. By 1880 it has another name change under the patronage of Emma Cons as the Royal Victoria Hall and Coffee Tavern. But by that time, people had already grown to call it the "Old Vic" and the name stuck.

With such a long history, the Old Vic has as wide a repertoire acted out on stage. Spanning from Shakespearean, to modern drama as well as a short stint when ballet companies performed on its platforms, it has witnessed the changing of hands as many times as it changed names. Under the guidance of John Gielgud the year 1929 witnessed the establishment of the Old Vic Company, but that too was dissolved in 1963 and remerged as the National Theatre Company under Laurence Oliver. In 2004 prominent actor Kevin Spacey was named artistic director of the Theatre Company where he hopes to revive the vigor of British Theatre.

Known to many as "the actor's theatre", the Old Vic has weathered storms through wars and blitzes and has emerged as one of the best known theatres in the world. Some of the best performers such as Sybil Thorndyke, Peggy Ashcroft, Vivien Leigh, Peter O'Toole, Kevin Spacey, Dame Judi Dench and Maggie Smith have been known to lay bare their souls on this stage.

The sense of nostalgia aroused on a visit to the Old Vic would only be enhanced if you opt to stay at The Langham London. Charmingly Victorian and rich in heritage, this London hotel boasts of an elite guest list, luxurious accommodation and excellent facilities amongst London hotels.
