Since its release in late 2009, the Nokia N900 has proven a hit handset for the manufacturer. Packed with useful functionality, its key features include touch screen navigation, slide-out QWERTY keyboard, internet access and a 5 mega pixel camera.

The unit measures 110.9x59.8.18mm and weighs in at 181 grams, due to the addition of the keyboard. The screen measures a generous 3.5 inches for easy navigation when using the TFT resistive touch screen. The screen is capable of displaying up to 16 million colours within pixels at 800x480. The on screen content is automatically rotated based on the orientation of the phone, thanks the built in accelerometer sensor. This allows content to be viewed in portrait or landscape accordingly.

With the option to utilise MP3 music files as ringtones, the handset can be customised to suit the users' tastes. This function operates alongside vibration to alert of incoming calls and messages. A 3.5mm audio jack and a speakerphone system offer options for hands free communication.

The Nokia N900 offers plenty of storage for data such as media files. 32 GB of internal storage is provided, along with a micro SD slot, which can provide a further 16 GB if required, simply by installing a larger memory card.

EDGE and GPRS (both of which are Class 32 versions) provide the primary means of network connection. In areas covered by 3G, HSDPA and HSUPA provide connectivity for the handset. In order to gain a faster internet connection, the N900 can harness the signal given off by local wireless internet routers via Wi-Fi. As a means of file sharing with compatible handsets in the same locality, Bluetooth is installed. By utilizing this function, files and data can be shared efficiently and free of charge. Certain applications function based on the location of the handset, and this is made possible thanks to GPS with A-GPS support.

The N900 has an impressive 5MP (2576x1936) digital camera. This features autofocus, LED flash, video light, and even Carl Zeiss Optics, which leave no doubts about the camera's built quality. The camera also features the ability to shoot video, and this is in WVGA quality (848x480) at 25 fps.

A whole host of media files are supported by the phone's media player, in both music and video formats. These can easily be transferred to and from a PC by using the provided USB connection. This allows files to be dragged and dropped to the phone, as well as carrying out tasks such as backing up contact information. As well as playback of media files, other entertainment features include stereo FM radio player and several games with an application which allows access to a library of downloadable games.

This is certainly one of the most versatile handsets to come out of the Nokia camp so far. Its impressive range of features makes it a serious rival to several other Smartphone manufacturers.
