The Motorola Dext is a high specification mobile phone, which could quite easily be mistaken for a top of the range PDA. Offering many advanced features, this recently released handset has provided Motorola with a winner. The handset offers a full QWERTY keyboard as well as an impressively colourful display screen. It measures 114 mm x 58 mm wide and is 15 mm thick, whilst weighing 163 g in weight. It provides internet access as well as smart phone technology.

The 3.1 inch TFT capacitive touch screen offers excellent quality of image with faithful colour reproduction. This is in part due to the fact that it is able to display 256,000 colours at a pixel screen size of 320 x 480 pixels. In addition an accelerometer and proximity sensors are provided which provide the means to automate certain tasks such as orientation of imagery and the saving of battery power. The screen utilises the MOTOBLUR user interface as its means of navigating around the available functions as well as also providing live widgets. The aforementioned full QWERTY keyboard is housed behind the main front panel and simply slides out, offering landscape mode data entry. In conjunction with the keyboard a five way navigation key is also provided.

The Motorola Dext utilises the Qualcomm MSM 7201A 528 MHz processor as well as the Android operating system, which is version 1.5 otherwise known as Cupcake. These two elements provide the basis for its responsive functionality and multitasking capabilities. The phone comes with an internal memory of 1 GB, with some packages including a 2 GB SD card. In addition for further expansion of the memory up to 32 GB, the microSD card slot is available.

Internet access is provided by the HSDPA and Wi Fi connections, offering speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps as well as the ability to connect to a wide variety of nationally available Wi Fi hotspots. In addition, blue tooth and USB are also included as well as GPRS and EDGE. Satellite navigation is provided by the GPS facility, which also includes A-GPS support.

The ability to take photos is also provided with this handset by virtue of a 5.0 megapixel camera, which operates at 2592 x 1944 pixels and comes with geo-tagging and auto focus as standard. HVGA quality video can be recorded on this device which is at 24 frames per second.

Entertainment is also provided by virtue of an MP4/MP3 player, which includes Shazam. A digital compass, organiser, document viewer and iMeem mobile as well as a voice memo function are also all provided.

The Motorola DEXT MB220 is a comprehensively functional and appealing handset. Offering a wide variety of features encased within an aesthetically pleasing and eminently usable casing, its popularity is understandable when considering its advanced technology.
