The Evergreen Dev Anand of Bollywood

Dev Anand, affectionately called as the evergreen performer of Bollywood, made public go mad with his acting skills. Other than being an amazing actor, he was also a director and a producer. A native of Gurdaspur, he has two famous filmmakers Vijay Anand and Chetan Anand as his siblings. Sheel Kanta Kapur, mother of internationally acclaimed director Shekhar Kapur, is his sister.

His contribution, love and commitment towards Indian films made the Indian Government honor him with the prestigious Padma Bhushan and Dadasaheb Phalke Award. He was working at the military office before he entered the world of films. His first film was Hum Ek Hain. But, Ziddi was the 1st film, which gave him a break. He was cast opposite to Kamini Kaushal in this film, which tasted success. After the success of his movie, Dev Anand established Navketan, which was his own film producing company, in 1949.

By choosing Guru Dutt as the captain of the ship for the film Baazi, he took the correct decision, which resulted in the success of the film. 1952 release Taxi Driver was also blockbuster. He got married to Kalpana Kartik, with whom he was paired in this film.

He became famous among his followers, for his distinctive way of delivering dialogues and head nods. His acting career started growing during the '50s with films like Kala Pani and Insaniyat. His enactment in the second film, won Dev Anand the Best Actor Award. Six films became smash hits in which he acted with Suraiya.

His first movie in color was Guide, in which he performed with Waheeda Rehman. This film was based on a novel written by the popular writer, RK Narayan. Dev Anand showed his versatility by emoting romance, comedy, greed and salvation in this film and was extremely appreciated.

He reunited with his sibling Vijay Anand to make a film named Jewel Thief, which showed some of the most beautiful actresses like Vyjanthimala, Helen, Tanuja, Anju Mahendru and Faryal. Johnny Mera Naam, which too was a result of their reunification, was a great success. His directorial debut Hare Rama Hare Krishna saw the rising of Zeenat Aman, a talented actress. Another actress whom he introduced to films was Tina Munim.
