The Blackerry 8520 Purple Is A Colourful Alternative

The Blackberry 8520 was originally released in August 2009, but has recently seen some new colour variants added to the range. This includes the unique purple version of the handset, which is sure to add to the appeal of this functional handset.

The 8520 measures 109x60x13.9mm and weighs in at 106 grams making it a lightweight phone for comfort of use. The 2.46 inch TFT screen is capable of displaying up to 65,000 colours at 320x240 pixels. The lower half of the handset is dominated by a full QWERTY keyboard for convenient text entry. Navigation of menus is carried out by a touch sensitive optical track pad as seen on several other Blackberry models.

Vibration and ringing alerts users to incoming calls and messages, with the option to download extra polyphonic ringtones and utilize MP3 music files as ringtones. A speakerphone system is built in allowing hands free communication, whilst a 3.5mm audio jack accommodates hands free kits and headphones for listening to music. Dedicated music keys offer a convenient method of controlling music.


256MB of internal memory is provided as standard with the 8520 purple. However a microSD slot can be utilized to increase this. It can accommodate a memory card of up to 32GB for generous storage space of media files and other data.

Connection to networks is catered for through a variety of methods. Firstly, class 10 versions of both GPRS and EDGE are included. For a faster internet connection the handset can take advantage of local wireless internet routers. Bluetooth version 2.0 is installed as standard allowing users to share files and data with compatible handsets in the same vicinity.

Photos of a reasonably high quality can be taken thanks to the built in digital camera. This boasts 2MP and operates at a pixel resolution of 1600x1200 pixels. It can also shoot video in QVGA quality as an alternative to taking still images.

A versatile media player is also included. This can play several different file formats of both music and video files. Media files can easily be transferred to and from a computer thanks to a micro USB port. An alternative means of entertainment is a range of pre-installed games with the option to download additional games if required. Extra useful features include an organizer and voice memo recorder.


Whilst the spec list for this handset may seem basic compared to many other Blackberry models, it is still ideal for everyday use and contains most functions found on competitors' handsets. Its appeal though, lies in the styling and range of colours available. These include the aforementioned purple version, black, violet, blue and white. Therefore a colour to suit most tastes is sure to be found.
