Text messages were not in the same stage of popularity as they seems to have today after Neil Papworth, a 22-year-old test engineer for Sema Group used a personal computer to send the text message "Merry Christmas" via the Vodafone network to the phone of Richard Jarvis in December of 1992. Up till 1995 customers were sending 0.4 message per day per GSM service holder. Reason for the slow pick up of text message service was due to telecommunication service providers inability to fix the prices for prepaid holders and to stop billing fraud, which was possible by changing SMSC settings on individual handsets to use the SMSCs of other operators .

But now this form of text message is the most widely used data application all over the world, with 2.4 billion active users and counting more.
