In the present era, we cannot imagine a world without telephone calls, fax, e-mails, text messaging and even video calling. As technology becoming superior day by day, the means of communication that we are using make it possible for us to send instant messages back and forth. Any form of transmission, emission, or reception of signs, signals, writings, images, sounds, or information by means of wire, radio, visual, or other electromagnetic systems for communication purposes is known as Telecommunication or Telecom. Wireless, landline, cellular phones, cable, satellite phones, voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) and the Internet are the modern forms of telecom. TV, Radio and networks are some most common and well known examples of telecom.

Telecom systems consist of three fundamental elements:

  • Transmitter: It takes information and converts it to a signal

  • Transmission medium: It carries the signal

  • Receiver: It receives the signal and converts it back into usable form

Telecom over phone lines is called point-to-point communication because it is between one transmitter and one receiver. Telecom through radio broadcasts is called broadcast communication as it is between one powerful transmitter and numerous receivers. A collection of transmitters, receivers or transceivers that communicate with one another is known as a network.

The advent of Telecom has changed the world immensely. Earlier, people from one part of the world were isolated from the other part but now they have multiple ways to see and hear each other. It has brought the world closer. Telephone, television, and the Internet have kept the world connected.

Telecom Industry is growing at a fast pace in India and it stands fifth in the world. The wireless technologies currently in use in Indian are Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) and Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA). There are 9 GSM and 5 CDMA operators in India providing mobile services in 19 telecommunication circles and 4 metro cities, covering more than 2000 towns across the nation. Telecom Industry in India is regulated by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

The popularity of mobile phones in Telecom Industry has been sky-high by the advent of a variety of SIM cards. These SIM cards enable you to make a call to any number in the world from any place.
