Everybody knows the corporate culture but very few people are aware of the back end work going on in the corporate. It is rightly said that a little knowledge is very dangerous thing. Either one must possess the full knowledge or one should not interrupt in the things going on. Along with the knowledge of how to communicate effectively, one should also have knowledge about how the things are going on in the corporate world. One should know how the computers are connected to each other, what is the strategy or technology working behind such a vast networking in the corporate world?

The knowledge of Switch requires an in depth analysis of its working. Switch is more efficient than the hub. Let us take a look at what is the function of the switch. Each packet of data which is being transmitted on the network has a definite source and destination MAC address. A switch is quite efficient to remember the address of each computer and has the ability to pass the required transmitted data to the destination machine. Thus, it acts as a traffic cop maintaining the huge traffic coming from all sides. It escalates the network performance to a great extent because the unnecessary transmissions are deleted thus giving way to increased performance of network bandwidth.

Both hub and class 5 softswitch have similar functions to perform but there is a considerable difference. The difference is that the switch does not retransmit frames to all other devices. It makes a direct link between transmitting and the receiving devices. A switch is a multi port bridge. It is meant to reduce the size of collision domain. It leads to many advantages like faster CPUs, memory, Content addressable Memory (CAM) and application-specific Integrated Circuits (ASIC).

CAM is a back end memory which can provide you associated address the moment you provide a data value to it. It also makes the switch find the port associated with the data value. On the other hand, ASIC is a device which can perform functions at logic speed in hardware. Both these technologies are quite helpful in reducing the delays caused by software processing and keep pace with the high data rates of market.

A Switch can operate in three modes; store and forward, cut through and fragment-free. In the first one, the switch can read the entire frame and check for errors. In the second one, switch can read a limited part from beginning of the frame to destination MAC address. In the third one, the first 64 bytes of a frame are read which can easily determine if it is a collision fragment or not. If it is a collision fragment, it is accountable for majority of frame errors.
