The world of mobile phones was shaken this past February at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona with the announcement of the first ever Playstation phone. Gamers everywhere can rejoice as the new handset is built specifically for those who can’t go a second without some sort of virtual second-life to help stimulate reality. After years (and years) of rumours buzzing about the possible release of a new gaming phone, Sony Ericsson finally showed it off to hundreds of technology lovers in Spain.
The Xperia Play is to run on the Android Gingerbread platform providing access to the thousands of apps available on the Android market, so you can explore the city with 3D maps or download your favourite books to read when your fingers tire of button mashing in games. The Play offers a good sized four inch, 854 x 480 megapixel screen for a clear display, and a super-fast Snap Dragon processor and Adreno 205 graphical processor to compliment the high graphics demanded in many games.
For those worried about a substandard gaming experience due to the traditionally reduced functionality of mobile phone controls, fear not, as there is a slide out game controller complete with dedicated gaming controls and analogue joystick. These give you the ability to play with the best of them on both the pre-loaded games and the extra titles that are to be rolled out over the coming years. Stereo sound is available on the mobile phone, as well as a 3.5 mm audio jack to connect your favourite pair of headphones with.

Gmail pushed straight to your handset, Google Earth and Facebook all come as preloaded apps for the socialiser and businessman alike. And the cherry on top is not just the 5.1 megapixel camera integrated with messaging capabilities, nor the front facing camera designed to allow video chat, but the straight-to-YouTube software that will make uploading your captured memories a breeze for the world to see. It seems that the folks at Sony held nothing back and truly understand the need to share your gaming conquests with those across the mobile internet.
If you want a smartphone that can make calls, get on the internet, social network, multitask, and play your music, take your pick. They are run of the mill. But if you want to turn the world of mobile phones on its head and really experience everything that a smartphone has the potential to offer, Sony Ericsson should be your first stop. From making calls to making headshots, the Xperia Play has it all.
