Smart Mobile In the Works

Officials at Smart Mobile Wireless, which operates out of Nevada, Las Vegas in the United States, told the SUNDAY SUN that as soon as Barbados goes fully Wi-Fi later this year, they will launch their revolutionary mobile service which will allow unlimited local and worldwide calling to any landline or mobile numbers anywhere in the world.

Barbadians will be able to download the programme at smartmouthmobile.com for US$ 19.99 per year but unlike the popular Magic Jack which is also Internet-based, clients will not have to stay in front of the computer but can move around and talk on their phones from anywhere.

Vice-President of Operations Corbey McCoy stated: "The news of the nationwide Wi-Fi in Barbados provides a springboard to bring affordable unlimited international calling to Barbados and the entire Caribbean. Our mobile applications will allow everyone who uses them to have unlimited calling and texting member to member.

Wi-Fi refers to wireless networking technology that allows computers and other devices to communicate over a wireless signal.

McCoy said one of the most revolutionary aspects of their programmes was that, unlike other social networking and communications applications on the market, their cutting edge applications also worked on the iPod Touch or iPad as well as Android and Blackberry tablets, effectively turning them into mobile communication devices.

In addition the company has already announced on its web page that it will give free lifetime subscriptions, known as "Pay It Forward", for their mobile applications to all children under the age of 18 and all members of the security services, including the police and defense forces, the coast guard, ambulance personnel, customs officers and fire-fighters as well as doctors and nurses and up to four members of their immediate family.

We want to show support for those who give so much to society and also to ensure that children have the gift of unrestricted communication as well, "McCoy explained. "This great humanitarian undertaking will begin in Barbados and spread across the Caribbean and the rest of the world as we fulfill our goal to provide unlimited communication to every person on the planet, giving away nearly $1 billion a year in subscriptions to the unlimited calling service."

He said Smart Mobile was already reaping success in the United States and Canada with its innovative programme and had secured millions of accounts, even though the launch was on June 10.

Asked why Barbados was chosen, company official Simon George said he was a regular visitor to the island and had noticed that Barbadians were paying "extremely high cell-phone bills" and that it was still expensive to make international calls.

"We want to show telecommunication companies worldwide that they can’t keep being greedy," he remarked. "We believe that everyone should have the ability to communicate without being restricted due to their economic or financial condition. There is absolutely no catch to this."

The SUNDAY SUN contacted both LIME and Digicel to find out how this online threat would affect their operations. Alex Tasker, commercial director at Digicel, stated: "We will not offer and comments at this time." Up to press time there was no comment from and of LIME’s officials.

The Fair Trading Commission said this would not fall under its purview and suggested checking with the telecommunications Department. However, efforts to reach Chief Telecommunications Officer Reginald Bourne proved futile.

Last month the Barbados Entrepreneurship Foundation Inc. announced there were plans to achieve 100 per cent Wi-Fi coverage in Barbados by November 11, 2011
