It is certain
by regular visitors that Menorca may be on a
Balearic Island but that it is totally different from
any of the other islands in the group such as
Ibiza, Formentera or Mallorca.

I cannot pass an opinion on Mallorca as I have never visited
any part of this island however as a consequence of
holidays in Ibiza and Formentera I can vouch for the uniqueness of Menorca.

The population increases by a factor of two in high season as the 90,000 locals are joined each week by visitors, from as far afield as the USA but mainly from Germany, the UK and the Spanish mainland.

There is no doubt that most visitors head for the beaches so the rest of the Island still remains tranquil and unspoilt.

In the past the locals avoided the coastal areas not because of medieval tourists but because of the risk to their lives as a result of the Pirates who controlled these areas.

It is no surprise that the captivating beaches and Coves of Menorca are the primary draw for tourists. With about a hundred beaches and coves of which the vast majority can be relatively easily acccessed by land or sea you can understand why you can still walk a short distance from a popular location to find yourself on a near deserted beach, even at the height of summer.

Menorca's quite calm and legendery under developed environment is no accident. In 1993 Menorca became a Biosphere Reserve. Under the UNESCO Biosphere programme almost half of the island being protected from overdevelopment, by one means or another. This halted the worst excesses of mass tourism which had happened to significant parts of its sister islands. Today Menorca has no Ibiza Town , no Santa Antoni and no Magaluf.

What does Menorca have in abundance, away from its wealth of beaches. There are Archeological remainds from burial chambers dating from 5000BC together with ancient settlement throughout the island.

You can find History at every turn with Muslim Relics, Roman Ruins at Sanisera and evidence of the islands Pirate past such as at Cala Turqueta.

As Europe grew in importance and scummed to a period of war making the island became a pawn in these events and came under the rule of the English, the French and the Spanish in less than 200 years of its 7,000 year history.

The periods under foreign dominance meansall of these occupying powers have left their mark on Menorca's history and made it the unique island you see today. Remember Menorca is only 2 hours flying time from most of the UK making the airfare cheap and your carbon footprint smaller. Accommodation can be as expensive or as economical as you wish, Menorca even has two campsites.
