Risks and Benefits of Liposuction - What Prospective Patients Should Know

Like any other cosmetic surgery, Liposuction has both its good points and risks involved. It is up to each individual to decide if the benefits outweigh the risk. It is imperative that you discuss with your surgeon if you are a good candidate medically for the procedure.

Benefits of Liposuction

Risks Associated with Liposuction
- Adverse reaction to anesthesia or IV sedation: Adverse reactions can happen at anytime when anesthesia is administered even if a patient has not had adverse reactions in the past. There is also a risk of adverse reactions to other medications you surgeon my prescribe for pain management
- Infections: Improper sterilization of equipment and poor postoperative care are two leading causes for infection risks.
- Skin ulcerations
- Nerve injury: Although very rare permanent nerve damage is a possible risk. There is a risk of nerve compression, which can change the sensation or cause total numbness of the skin. Change in sensation can be from one degree, high pain, to the opposing degree, total numbness.
- Irregularities of the skin: kin can be left looking lumpy, lazy, or extremely deformed.
- Pulmonary thromboembolism: Blood clots in the lung can form because of using general anesthesia, excessive surgical trauma, and/or obesity.
- Intra-Abdominal Perforation with Visceral Injury: During the liposuction procedure, there is a risk of the cannula puncturing internal organs and if not caught in a timely fashion can lead to serious repercussions up to death.
- Hematoma or Seroma
- Pulmonary Edema: Excessive fluid builds up in the lungs that can result in death.
