I would certainly award this particular 3D movie review an ”A-” on the grading scale for 3-d effects.

Setting up the stage for you in brief: Rio is an animated film from the brains behind “Ice Age”. You will find that your little kids will be able to enjoy a short, silly video clip of ”Scrat” and his acorn at the beginning of Rio . This kind of touching show is the typical fairytale storyline written for two rare tropical Macaw birds, Blu (domesticated small pet from Minnesota, USA) and Jewel (free, but captured by researcher Tulio, in Rio). As they are brought together to mate and preserve their species, Blu and Jewel are stolen by thugs, are chained together, then escape only to encounter countless challenges in an effort to accomplish their desired goals of Blu becoming reunited with his “partner” Linda and Jewel getting set free. Blu together with Jewel are 100 % polar opposites. But somewhere in all of the evading the evil bad guys (a trio of brainless smugglers, a menacing cockatoo, along with a crew of crooked monkeys) and attempting to attain their primary target - the two Macaws fall in love. In the end Blu is confronted with saving the ”damsel in distress” to accomplish his new dream of “living happily ever after” with Jewel. Rio is definitely a fast and humorous, yet charming movie.

Rio is a must see in 3-d! Many similar kids flicks I personally have seen in 3-d simply have small slight special effects adding some depth to the movie, typically not necessarily enough so that you can feel as if you’re really getting your money’s worth watching it in 3-d. However, with “Rio”, the movie director draws the viewer into the flick from the very beginning in a delightful rainforest scene of wild birds flying, grooving and singing modern day Latin music. You not only feel the beat, you observe it as these lively exotic birds hover right out of the screen and into the movie theater. The flight of these gorgeous birds was a theme that re-occurred a few times within the flick.

Another moment of ”3-d bliss” occurred in the middle of the movie whilst Blu and Jewel are in “flight” (or should i say trying to make it down safely) over the computer reproduced adaptation of the alluring town of Rio, South America. During this scene, the director takes you on an amazing adventure overlooking the area, with an awesome close-up of the “Christ the Redeemer” sculpture. As they start to make their approach to ground level, the scene leaves the viewers feeling almost like they were the one freely hovering through the open air.

Why do I give this 3D movie review of Rio an “A-“ instead of the “A”? Basically, all good things have something that can be polished. Rio had a a handful of chasing scenes, one with Blu together with Jewel being chased from the mindless thieves and another with Linda(Blu’s friend) and Tulio (the researcher from South America) on a sport cycle. These scenes left me personally feeling a bit spun with 3d glasses on. In spite of this, I immediately bounced back, and this may not happen to everybody.

The film again finished in the way it commenced, with the tropical wild birds grooving, performing and soaring through the air, drawing the viewer back in for just one final free-spirited instance of excitement in 3-d.

If you have a choice between watching the 2D and the 3D version of Rio, I would definitely splurge on the 3D version.
