Anyone with a lawn knows that you need to keep mowing it on a regular basis to keep it in good condition. It's good exercise, but it's also probably something that most of us would rather not be doing! So, you want to make it as easy as possible - why not invest in a modern cordless lawn mower? It may be a little more expensive than traditional gas or corded electric models, but the time savings, safety benefits and other advantages can more than make up for it.

What Are Cordless Lawn Mowers?

Cordless lawn mowers are essentially the same as electric lawn mowers but rather than being tethered to an electrical outlet with an extension lead, they include a rechargable battery with enough power to mow most lawns on a single charge. This provides you with a gas powered mower's "go anywhere" ability along with the advantages of an electric mower.

So What are the Advantages?

Safety and Cordless Lawn Mowers

In my opinion, one of the most compelling reasons for choosing a cordless lawn mower is the reduced risk. There is no longer any need to trail an extension lead across the garden, as you would with an old-fashioned electric mower, so you don't have the risk of accidently slicing into the cord as you run over it with the mower blade. OK, you can use a circuit breaker, but would you really want to trust your life to one?

Being powered by electricity rather than gas means that you don't have to transport, store and fill the mower with very flammable gasoline, so giving an obvious safety benefit over gas powered mowers.

Other Reasons to Choose a Cordless Lawn Mower

All mowers need some maintenance, but with electric mowers that's pretty much limited to sharpening the blades once or twice a season. With a gas powered mower you'll also need to factor in changing its oil, air filter and spark plug each year and draining or stabilising the fuel at the end of the season.
Gas powered mowers can take a lot of space, so if your shed or garage is on the small side this could be a good reason to go for a cordless mower. Most models can even be hung on the wall to save space if necessary giving them a big advantage over gas. They're also generally lighter in weight so making them easier to handle and manoeuvre.
I won't try and claim that electric mowers are silent, but they're a lot quieter than typical gas powered models. Anyone using a gas mower may quickly find they're in need of a pair of ear defenders! A quieter electric model will certainly make you more popular with the neighbours.

It's also worth bearing in mind the environmental factors, after all don't you want to enjoy your garden as part of a pleasant environment? Gas mowers can emit some pretty nasty fumes that you don't really want to be breathing in as you're mowing your lawn, while cordless lawn mowers obviously have no emissions.
