Props have been used since the 16th Century, when travelling theatre troupes would span the country providing entertainment in the streets and Royal Courts. They would carry with them their costumes, instruments and ‘company property’, which they would use to create the imaginary world of the play.

Props have come a long way since the 16th Century, and today are used not only in theatre but also for television and film, and even at events and parties. They are the tools we use to create realism, and can be the deciding factor in a great play, great film or great party.

Theatrical props are specifically designed for their purpose. In other words if an actor requires a gun on stage he will have a prop gun designed to look utterly realistic but with safety in mind. Similarly in film certain props have to be created for the purpose of safety. Think how many times you have seen the notorious scene of an actor going through a giant pane of glass, or smashing through a window. If that glass were real, the scene could resort in a very nasty accident! The glass is however made from crystallized sugar, which gives the same shattered affect without causing any harm.

Props are not only designed for the purpose of safety. Props need to be absolutely accurate to the time, genre or era in which they are set; otherwise they will stick out like a sore thumb. When the props are absolutely in sync with the scene, the audience can believe the action in front of them.

Props are fantastic for parties because they allow your guests to relax and get into the spirit of the atmosphere.
