Rhinoplasty, commonly known as the "nose-job", is a form of surgical procedure undertaken to change the structure and appearance of one's nose. Performed by either a maxillofacial surgeon or a plastic surgeon, the procedure is carried out in cases of medical need (reconstructive surgery) and desired aesthetic improvements.
Rhinoplasty, along with other related cosmetic surgeries, has risen in popularity with the endorsement and frequent indulgences of movie stars and celebrities. Although the primary objective of the science remains to reconstruct damaged noses and correct breathing disorders arising from accidents or birth defects, the aesthetic aspect of the surgery has gained greater prominence in recent times. Thus, the definition of the best rhinoplasty surgeon has shifted slightly; instead of the surgeon's ability to best understand the defect and correct it, patients seek a surgeon with the best aesthetic record. The medical fraternity's growing practice of referring to patients of cosmetic surgeries as customers and clients is a strong indication of the preponderance of the beauty aspect, over the medical requirement, in rhinoplasty surgery.

There are two major approaches to this procedure: closed rhinoplasty or open rhinoplasty. Closed rhinoplasty involves incisions made inside the nostrils, to separate the soft tissues connecting the nose to the face and to reshape the cartilage. In case of open approach, another incision is made to the skin separating the two nostrils. Choosing between the two approaches depends upon the nature of the job to be performed and the discretion of the rhinoplasty surgeon.

A customer dissatisfaction level of up to 20% means that revision rhinoplasty is a regular procedure for a plastic surgeon. Revision rhinoplasty is done to correct an unsatisfactory outcome from a previous operation. This can be with relation to breathing difficulties, skin problems, improper fixing of the reshaped nose to the face or dissatisfaction with the appearance of the nose.
As is obvious, the trickle down effect of celebrity life will only lead to further increases in the number of people opting for facial surgeries, such as rhinoplasty, for corrective and aesthetic purposes.
