The Nokia 5800 is officially the UK's number one portable music player -and it's a phone! Let's have look at its features and see if we can explain its success.

The Nokia 5800 was released in 2008 but still remains one of the most popular mobile phones on the market. Not only was the 5800 one of the first Nokia phones to be a touch screen phone, its also one of the thinnest touch screen phones out there - at just 52mm wide. It is, if nothing else, a very pocket-friendly phone.

The phone supports finger and stylus input as well as a limited range of voice commands. It uses the S60 operating system which is capable of multi-tasking- you can run more than one application at a time.

The phone was one of Nokia's first Comes With Music mobile phones which was certainly a factor in its success. The phone itself only has 80 MB of memory but can support a MicroSD card, so you can ensure you have enough space for all your music. The Nokia 5800 has a 3.5mm headphone jack, so your favourite headphones will still be compatible.

Surfing the web is another area in which the Nokia 5800 stands out. The large 3.2 inch screen does justice to most websites as does the 3g and WiFi connectivity. You can surf the web as fast as your network will allow on one of the largest screens available.

The browser can also read flash (unlike many higher-end handsets) and its email software can read PDFs and Microsoft Office documents. You cannot as yet, edit these documents as this requires additional licensing from Microsoft.

The camera is 3.2 mega pixels which, whilst not the highest resolution available today, is perfectly adequate. The Carl Zeiss lens, the 4x digital zoom and flash ensure that all the photos on your mobile phone will be as good, if not better than a lot of other mobile phones. There is also a camera on the front of the phone so you can make video calls to people on compatible handsets.

The latest iteration of the Nokia 5800 is the 5800 navigation. This model comes with a lifetime subscription to the Ovi map software which has turn-by-turn navigation whether you're walking or driving. The navigation also works in many countries throughout the world so with any luck, you'll never get lost again! The Ovi pages navigation service is available on all other versions of the 5800 for a small fee.
