Maternity photography is no doubt an important activity to be desired by the expectant mothers and would-be fathers. After handling initial opposition from community or elder family members, the other issues that come to our mind are preparedness and budget. Both are closely related; it is must to separate both of these for the better planning.

Modern mothers dare to pose topless or semi nude. If you too are one among them, discuss this issue with the photographer prior to prepare the session. However, topless or nude maternity photographs are common nowadays. Clothing plays important role in photographer's preparation also.

Many mothers think that preparedness for pregnancy period photography needs budgets. Then, how can they separate it from budget considerations? It is easy. Many ladies think that it is must to have beautiful designer dresses to make the maternity photographs more impressive. The dress manufacturers and apparel stores get the commercial advantage of this craze. I do not say it is a total wastage. Maternity swim wear, bathing suits, night dresses and formal wear for fashionable pregnant mothers are available in wide range but the prices of these clothes are little high because of being for specific purpose. However, if the budget is constraint, there is absolutely no need to invest for this purpose.

Stretchy and snug-fitting tops and pants are good and you will find many in your or husband’s wardrobe. Fabric that adheres to body’s curves is considered good for this purpose because these expose the development of focused area. Jeans with open zip is also a good option. Negligee, sandals with heels, stylish hat and simple jewellery are easy to find in house. Shawls, scarves and fluid fabrics may give a glamorous look to your personality. Nobody is going to ask, whether you bought new or these were already with you.

You would have seen that most maternity portraits show bare belly. There shouldn’t be marks over that area, which are generally left by the clothes with tight elastic. Put the waistband of pants or underwear low. This will not leave lines on the belly area to be focused. Wear loose-fit top during photo session. Light lines that may appear on portraits can be touched up by professional photographer. However, it will increase the price quote.

When you plan for the maternity photography, you also think about the locations. You try to select the most exotic locales to make your maternity photographs more attractive. The attraction center of pregnancy period photographs is not the background; instead, it is the belly area, face and breast because most visible development takes place here only.

So, if you are doing the maternity photography yourself, it is a low budget exercise. Keep it simple. Focus to capture the innocence, facial expression and bodily development. Be creative to bring freshness in the maternity photographs.
