I was surprised while in the party supply store at the number of items geared toward a person turning 30 that joke about him being over the hill. In my opinion, if you're trying to tell someone they're old at 30, then you must really be hoping for him to die.

Sure, when I was six I thought 30 was old. Now that I'm over 30 but act like I'm six, I realize how young it is. My advice? Don't start making fun of people for being old until they can't hear you or read the card.

Instead of goofing on your friend for turning 30, why not look up all of the cool stuff that went down the year he was born? You can set up a big poster board to display it all.

Take note of the music that came out the year your friend was born and make a giant playlist of songs from that year. If you're a good buddy, you'll just give him a new mp3 player with all of the tunes loaded.

Also, I suggest you remember who the party is for. You may think it's fun to have a theme party with costumes. Perhaps you're considering having the party at a bowling alley. If the birthday person doesn't dig costumes or bowling don't put him up to it. Even though you think it's a way better party than playing pool at the pub, that may be exactly what he'd love to do.

The lesson here is that sometimes, simple ideas are best. One of the things that makes a 30th birthday special is that people in their 30's tend to be more comfortable in their skin and have a clear idea of what they enjoy. Give them a day to do more of the stuff they like to do and less of what they hate.

For example, if your friend loves movies and hates housework, buy him a DVD for $20.00 and hire a cleaning service for $60.00. He can relax with the movie while his place gets cleaned. That's the kind of gift anybody turning 30 would appreciate.

Of course, nothing makes a party better than great entertainment. There are several options to choose from including belly dancers, fire eaters, comedians, magicians, and jugglers.

When it comes to hiring entertainment, you truly get what you pay for. Belly dancers make a lot in tips as part of their show so they cost less than many other performers. A good belly dancer will charge $350.00 and up for a show. For any of the other entertainment options I mentioned, you'd be hard pressed to get a really good performer for under $1,000.00.

You want to make sure the entertainer has a good demo video, offers a money-back guarantee, and can provide you with a list of satisfied clients. If the performer you're talking to can meet those requirements, you found a good one.

Lastly, make sure the food is killer. Again, don't get crazy with stuff that nobody really wants. Instead, find out your friend's favorite foods and stuff him to the gills!
