In September 1963, Mary Kay Ash created the company that carries her name to this day. Although embarrassed by the extreme critique from the press, the company was able to move forward away from this issue, but rapidly landed in serious trouble for another issue. The following major challenge was over the firing of a representative who hadn't produced for several months because of illness. The director lost the suit with the courts ruling that independent workers don't enjoy workplace protections that an employee would have. This was an impactful ruling for all businesses that hire impartial contractors.


When Mary Kay was started, Ms. Ash used her life savings of $5,000 to finance the first product line. By means of determination and marketing and advertising of consultants who were given the chance to earn money through her products, the company has grown to estimated annual revenue well over two billion dollars.
