Epilation by laser has been performed commercially since the 1970s. Light-based methods are sometimes called phototricholysis or photoepilation, but they are now known generally as "laser hair removal." Currently the practice is widely accepted within the dermatology community, and current laser hair removal information is readily available. It is a proven method for both body and face hair removal.

How does it work?

Laser hair removal works by light attacking the melanin in hair, that is, the dark pigmentation that makes hair appear brown or black. The dark material absorbs the laser light and is subsequently destroyed and broken down.

Since melanin is also found in darker skin tones, care must be taken in treating darker-skinned patients. The ideal laser hair removal candidate has dark hair and pale skin. Laser can be ineffective or even dangerous on patients with darker skin and lighter hair.

How many sessions will you need?

Multiple treatments are needed to effectively reduce the amount of hair permanently. Typically, six to eight sessions are needed, spaced eight to twelve weeks apart. The number off sessions can vary depending on the part of the body being treated, skin color, hair coarseness, and sex (male or female).

Risks and side effects

Probably the biggest factors are cost and pain. Because multiple sessions are needed, and results are not always predictable, laser treatment in total can add up to thousands. The second big factor, pain, can be somewhat alleviated by taking a topical anesthetic (such as EMLA) before undergoing a laser session.

Long term side effects can include burning and scarring. Most of this can be avoided by first making sure that you're an ideal candidate for laser. Secondly, choose a skilled practitioner who can decide the right wavelength and treatment course for your individual needs.
