If the Ellen DeGeneres' Oscar selfie became the most popular image on Twitter in year 2014, Komal Rizvi’s selfie & its many distortions became the most ridiculed images in Pakistan over the past few days.

Where Selfie is already viewed as a diversion from normal attitude- heavily bent towards narcissism, selfie with Abdul Sattar Edhi, one of the most esteemed men in Pakistan, bed-ridden due to old age and dialysis, came across as hugely offensive & invasive.

People across all social platforms cropped Komal’s chirpy self-image and pasted it on countless other images turning it into a raging storm of ridicule and scorn towards Komal Rizvi’s apparent insensitivity towards an ailing man and that too- the most revered Edhi sahib.

While Komal may definitely not taken the selfie out of insensitivity and disrespect and perhaps this was her way of saving her special moment with Edhi sb, it really didn’t turn out that way- not especially on social media.

However, it's not as if Komal's selfie was entirely taken in the wrong sense, there were people who came out in Komal's overwhelming support . Sadly, they were outnumbered by those who had already taken the offense and were in no way ready to surrender.

And much as Komal Rizvi says she was unaffected by the mockery & malice, the anger resonating in her statement shows otherwise.

As a person, I feel everyone has the right to act the way they like to without infringing upon the rights of others, for public figures the rule however becomes an exception. Since they are supposed to present themselves in a certain manner – one that essentially conforms to the popular ideals and public sentiments. So Ms Rizvi, who perhaps didn’t have vaguest idea what her gesture will translate into , now needs to learn the celebrity way soon or such negativity will follow.
