If your parent or grandparent is the member of an Ontario union affiliated to IUPAT District Council 46, you might be eligible for a scholarship award designed to offer you financial support as you pursue a higher education.

This year, IUPAT District Council 46 Scholarship Award Committee has approved two scholarship awards for children, grandchildren, and legally-adopted children of members of any Ontario union affiliated with the council. Initiated with a view to counter rising higher-education costs, the awards, comprising of $2000 each, are an extension of numerous financial opportunities and educational benefits already available to IUPAT members. Applicants for either scholarship award must have secured admission to a university, community college, vocational/technical institute, or any other institution of higher learning.

The two scholarship awards highlight IUPAT's commitment to education and higher learning. We believe that, in order to develop and sharpen their skills, and gain a better understanding of the unions they represent and their place in the world, union members must be encouraged to undertake educational opportunities.

To be eligible for either scholarship award, applicants must fill in an application form and submit an essay, between 1000 and 2000 words, on a topic chosen by the IUPAT District Council 46 Scholarship Committee. The topic this year is—Argue for and against the proposition that tactics undertaken by unions to increase membership—such as "salting," "stripping," and "market equalization funds"—should be banned on the grounds that they provide trade unions with an unfair advantage over employers. Applicants should comment on both sides of the argument and use relevant background information and examples to support their position.

The deadline for application is June 30, 2010. Completed application forms and accompanying essays must be submitted to the offices of the IUPAT District Council 46 Scholarship Award Committee by this date.

Applicants who are dependants of union members with outstanding fines and union dues in arrears for more than three months, will not be considered. Membership records in the offices of IUPAT District Council 46 will be used to determine the member's standing and eligibility of the member's dependants for either scholarship award.

In addition, officers and staff of IUPAT District Council 46, who sit on the Scholarship Award Committee, are prohibited from judging or selecting essays submitted by their dependants.

The IUPAT District Council 46 Scholarship Award Committee has long been committed to maintaining high standards of excellence within the IUPAT professional sphere, through its provision of educational benefits to IUPAT members and their relatives. You can support us in this mission by availing of these educational benefits.
