This show centers on a rather eclectic team of FBI profilers. They each have their own expertise and come together as the Behavioural Analysis Unit (BAU) of the FBI. They focus mainly on serial killers, trying to establish motive and anticipate the next move in hopes of stopping it before it happens.

David Rossi (Joe Mantegna) comes out of retirement to help the Behavioral Analysis Unit lead by Aaron Hotchner (Thomas Gibson), a family man who's able to gain people's trust and unlock their secrets. Also on the team are Emily Prentiss (Paget Brewster), the daughter of an ambassador and a surprise addition that neither Hotchner or Gideon signed off on; Derek Morgan (Shemar Moore), an expert in obsession crimes; Dr. Spencer Reid (Matthew Gray Gubler), a classical misunderstood genius whose social IQ is as low as his intellectual IQ is high; and Jennifer 'JJ' Jareau (A.J. Cook), a confident young agent who acts as the unit liaison for the team. Also helping the team is Penelope Garcia (Kirsten Vangsness), the team's audio/visual technician.

Each member brings their own area of expertise to the table as they pinpoint predators' motivations and identify their emotional triggers in an attempt to stop them.

In early 2009, Michael Ausiello from Entertainment Weekly said that the ABC and CBS studios are discussing the possibility of a spin-off. Studio Producer Ed Bernero confirmed it by disclosing that "it's safe to say there will be something soon." The show will have a completely new cast; yet, it is not confirmed whether there will be crossovers. In late 2009, the director has been chosen the casting is currently in progress. So far, it was announced that Forest Whitaker would be the star of the spin-off, and was at first approached by casting and later a deal was made. Whitaker will be introduced in an episode of Criminal Minds which will set the stage for the spin off. Beau Garrett as well will be a star.

Whitaker will set the stage for the spin-off in an episode of Criminal Minds around the end of the season. This will be exactly related to how NCIS: Los Angeles started. An episode of Criminal Minds will serve as a pilot episode for Minds 2.0.
