There has been a lot of discussion over how inefficient incandescent light bulbs are and how awful they are for the environment. Also the environmental supporters have now influenced government to implement the light bulb ban. This is a phased initiative to do away with the use of incandescent light bulbs and move to LED bulbs . In this short and complete analysis I provide some figures regarding how much you can cut down your carbon footprint by the movement to LED bulbs and how this economy compares with other C02 emission savings that you can make by lessening car travel or refined use of domestic electrical appliances.

How much C02 can you save by using LED bulbs .

Electric light bulbs themselves do not create C02 , however, it is the carbon dioxide that is made during the electricity generation that is the worry. Now categorically if you are using windmills or hydro-electric power to generate your electricity then C02 emissions will be very little. However, most electricity is generated from oil or gas powered generators which do create a large amount of C02. Lets look at the carbon footprint data. If a single conventional incandescent light bulb is turned on for 4 hours a day and this is changed to an energy saving light bulb then this will save a staggering 100kg in C02 emissions every single year.

How does this compare to driving my car or using the washing machine?

So you may well ask whether 100kg per year of C02 for is crucial and are there not other manners, as opposed to changing to LED bulbs, in which you can make this saving? In order to have a answer for these questions I will present then following data for review.
1. Driving a Ford Focus C-Max 1.8 for 333miles less each year will save the same amount of C02 as swapping one standard bulb to one of your LED bulbs.
2. Avoiding a 1000 mile train journey will save approximately 100kg in carbon dioxide release into the atmosphere. LED Bulbs offer you a comparable saving by just changing one!
3. If you fly from London to Glasgow on a full aeroplane then this will result in the release of 100kg in C02.

Checking out these comparisons then migrating to LED bulbs does look like a no brainer.

Some concluding remarks

It is clear to see that swapping to LED bulbs will make a huge improvement to your carbon footprint but there are other elements worth contemplating.

In rough terms dishwashers and washing machine use inbetween 2 and 4 kWhours of electricity per cycle. Therefore if you use them once a week then this is approximately equivalent to having a 100watt light bulb on for 4 hours a day. As I am sure you can see that while these amounts are fairly high they are not excessive so simply make sure the appliances are full and do not use your tumbler dryer if the sun is out.
