How to Take Care of Pet Problems on Carpet

Why is it that Fido always finds the nicest, cleanest carpet to relieve himself? You can have hard floors throughout your entire home, but he'll always go to the one room with carpet or rugs.

First, do everything you can to remove as much of the urine before it dries. My best advice is to use a wet vac or shop vac purchased at any hardwood store. Extract as much of the urine BEFORE you treat the area with any type of spotting agent.

This is very important. You want to remove as much of the urine so the cleaning agent can work on what is left behind. Otherwise, all you have is a puddle of urine with cleaning agent added to it. Extract what you can first, then treat what is left behind with your spotting agent.

What is the best spotting agent? First, I highly recommend you stay away from high residue products like Resolve. These products leave lots of residue and are typically high in alkalinity, which can cause yellowing and permanent staining.

Instead, use an enzyme on pet urine. A good quality enzyme is designed to eat up the odor causing bacteria in urine. Test out a few different enzymes as some work much better than others. Check with your carpet cleaner or pet store.

You'll want to allow the enzymes to soak for at least 30 minutes or longer. The longer they soak, the better for enzymes. Enzymes need time to dwell so they can digest the bad bacteria.

After soaking, pour a small amount of water on the area and extract with your wet vacuum. Allow the area to dry and then the urine will be removed.

That's it. It really is easy when you act FAST. Most urine problems are a result of neglect. Don't allow urine to sit in the carpet for longer than 24 hours. If it's something you can't take care of yourself, call a professional right away. The few dollars you spend on professional cleaning is cheap compared to replacing your carpet or rugs.
