Picking the perfect gift for your friends and loved ones is hard at the best of times but at Christmas choosing a great gift can really show the receiver how much you care and how well you know them. It's no good spending your hard earned money on something that will end up under the sofa or be finished by Boxing Day so you should aim to find a gift that will bring the receiver joy and pleasure over the coming months. Most people tend to buy gifts that they themselves like, this year make sure you really think about who your gift is for and why it will be the best present they receive this year.

The most important thing to do when choosing a gift is to find out a little more about the person you are buying for. Researching their hobbies and interests will help you narrow down what type of gift would suit them best. Dropping little hints about the type of things you'd think they would like is a sure fire way of getting their true opinion, if they turn up their nose at you mentioning they need to update their wardrobe then it's a good bet to stay away from that designer jumper you've been eyeing up. It's also a good plan to ask around to see what other friends and family are thinking of buying them; you don't want to be the third person in a row to give them the box set of their favourite TV show.

Once you've done the groundwork and think you've found the ideal gift it's time to go shopping. Try to find the time to do a bit of research and shop around to get the best deal on your gift. Many retailers offer special deals at this time of year so don't settle for the first thing you see. Shopping online is an easier option than trudging round the busy shops and can often work out cheaper than the high street stores so you could find yourself with some extra money to buy a few little extras to go with your main present.

Entertainment is always a good bet at Christmas time and can fit any budget. When the nights are long and the days are cold there is nothing better than snuggling up to read some Christmas Books, watch a classic holiday film or play games on your brand new Wii. If you're feeling creative then why not add some inventive wrapping, set up a festive treasure hunt or create a themed hamper which will show the receiver you thought of the gift specifically for them. If you keep all these things in mind you can rest assured that the gift you buy this year will be appreciated simply because of the thought and effort you've put into it.
