With more people unemployed than ever before, the prospects of owning a business and becoming self-employed have never looked more alluring. However, the entrepreneurial challenge is not meant for everybody, and knowing what characteristics make a good business owner can help you determine whether or not you will be successful. There are numerous entrepreneur readiness quizzes out there that can help you assess where your skill levels are and what your personality traits are in order to prepare for starting your own business. One thing that should be noted is that these quizzes are merely meant as self-assessments and should never deter anyone from achieving their dreams.

If you have a great idea, want to start your own business, and become an entrepreneur but find that you are lacking in some of the areas of your behavioral traits that are essential to being successful as a business owner, do not give up. Simply utilize the results of these entrepreneurial self-assessments in order to improve upon your existing skills or traits. Essentially, there are six basic traits of successful entrepreneurs in today's business world. Today's leading entrepreneurs are self-directed, self-nurturing, action-oriented, highly energetic, and tolerant of uncertainty.

Notice that being a risk-taker is not one of these traits, as is the desire to be rich. The decision to become an entrepreneur actually has very little to do with either of these. The majority of today's business owners do not ever become extensively wealthy, but start their own business because of the challenge, opportunity, and sense of freedom that entrepreneurialism provides. If you are a self-directed person, you need to consider how comfortable you are with your own level of self-discipline and the fact that the success or failure of your own business is going to depend on your own personal level direction. To be self-nurturing, you have to be able to believe in your own idea or product even when no one else does and be able to readily revive your own sense of passion when needed.

Because good ideas are often not enough to succeed in today's business world, you need to also be action-oriented and able to build your dream into a reality. In addition, being highly-energetic is often essential for today's increasingly competitive business owners. Entrepreneurs face a great deal of challenges, strenuous demands, and overwhelming pressure, and starting a business and making it succeed requires a great deal of work. An entrepreneur should be in top physical, mental, and emotional shape in order to take on the demands of starting a business. A tolerance for uncertainty is often one of the most difficult traits to achieve, and can be a real struggle for many. In business, there are many unforeseen things that can happen, and successful business owners need to not only be able to roll with the punches, but also take only calculated risks in an attempt to minimize damage to the business.
