As the nights quickly draw in and the weather dramatically cools down its time for you to put away the bright and fresh summer fragrances and look for something a little richer that matches the slightly heavier yet homely mood that most people associate with the move towards the cold and dark winter months. While throughout summer the most effective fragrances are light and fleeting, the autumn and winter allow you to really let your personality shine through some of the full-bodied and rich perfumes that seemed just a little to heavy for the summer heat.

Perfumers split fragrances into a set of "olfactive families"; these are the different groups that scents are able to fit into (things like floral, citrus, woody or aromatic). When moving into the autumn months the three fragrance families that you will want to pay the closest attention to are those that are oriental, aromatic or woody. Woody fragrances are a great match for autumn, leaves falling from trees and coating the ground is the first image that most people conjure up when they think of autumn, and a rich woody perfume can work well with this. When choosing a woody perfume you will probably want to look for one that combines some subtle floral notes in order to maintain a sense of femininity, as rich woody fragrances can sometimes seem masculine.

Oriental perfumes are also a perfect match for autumn. Oriental perfumes are characterised by their combinations of exotic, rich, sweet yet spicy scents. They often find their base in vanilla or amber and perfectly match the feeling of being curled up at home on a dark and cold autumn night. Although oriental fragrances are typically feminine they also work particularly well when they have some noticeably floral heart notes.

Autumn always feels like the run up to winter, and in particular the holiday season. Towards the end of the season as this feeling grows stronger some spicy aromatic perfumes can capture the mood beautifully. Cinnamon, clove and top notes of citrus can combine perfectly to create a sense of the festive season without being overbearing.

As we move into autumn why not take a bold step and select some rich and powerful fragrances that embody the moods of autumn as well as defining your personality.
