Many infertile couples today are turning to holistic infertility remedies when trying to conceive. Holistic medicine is defined by the Canadian Holistic Medical Association as follows:

"Holistic medicine is a system of health care which fosters a cooperative relationship among all those involved, leading towards optimal attainment of the physical, mental emotional, social and spiritual aspects of health.

It emphasizes the need to look at the whole person, including analysis of physical, nutritional, environmental, emotional, social, spiritual and lifestyle values. It encompasses all stated modalities of diagnosis and treatment including drugs and surgery if no safe alternative exists. Holistic medicine focuses on education and responsibility for personal efforts to achieve balance and well being."

Some aspects of holistic medicine include relaxation, acupuncture, positive thinking, and exercise. In general, those using a holistic approach when trying to conceive should avoid all unhealthy practices. In addition, it is recommended that chemicals be avoided as much as possible, such as those found in perfumes and household cleaners.

Holistic fertility practices suggest that men should avoid processed foods as well as foods that contain high amounts of estrogen. It is also important to eat a high fiber diet. It is also recommended that vitamins C and E, zinc, selenium, carnitine and beta carotene be taken as dietary supplements.

Men should also wear loose fitting underwear made of natural fabrics, avoid hot tubs, and eliminate cigarette smoke and contact with heavy metals. These measures have all shown to help improve sperm count and health.

A recent study conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health also recommends that soy food products be avoided by men, as they have been linked to infertility and shown to lower sperm count.

Women are advised to maintain a healthy weight and eat a nutritious diet. Alcohol and coffee are to be avoided, and women should also avoid contact with heavy metals. Women should take folic acid and vitamins B12 and B6.

There have been studies that have shown that mercury dental fillings have a negative effect on fertility and should be avoided. See your dentist if you believe you have mercury fillings.

Low levels of magnesium may also impair reproductive function and increase the risk of miscarriage. Couples may benefit from taking magnesium supplements.

Bee pollen is another interesting substance that has been shown to stimulate ovarian function and ability of eggs to withstand incubation period.

Traditional Chinese Medicine is a holistic approach that focuses on harmonizing energy flow and achieving a balance of yin and yang energies. It includes acupuncture, herb therapy and nutrition. Acupuncture has also been shown to help with couples receiving in vitro fertilization treatment.

While modern medical practices should not be discounted when treating fertility problems, a holistic approach can increase the chances of a couple being able to conceive a child.
