Green Power Solutions Part Four: Windmill Blades - To Make or To Buy?

Are you interested in building your own windmill? Or have you decided to? Hopefully you will have taken the right steps and purchased one of best guides on the subject. (Also see the first two links at the end of this article)
Some people may decide to be daring, and attempt the project without professionally written instruction. Either way, one will come to the important aspect of choosing blades for their windmills. In this article we'll discuss a couple of options available to you when it comes time to get hold of your own windmill blades, and the pro's and con's of either option.

Your first choice will be to either:

1) Build the blades yourself - this route is less expensive, but obviously will require some time and effort

2) Buy pre-made windmill blades - more expensive, but much less work

If you need to keep costs down, or you have the time and/or desire, you can build the blades yourself to fulfill these goals. Or, if your time is occupied, or valuable to you to the point that either route costs the same in the end, you can simply purchase pre-made blades for your wind turbines.

You can also consider a few of the advantages and disadvantages of the two routes, discussed next.

Building Your Own:

Advantages 1) Blades are custom-made for your windmill design and your area - Important in low wind speed areas, as you can design the blade to better catch the wind

2) You'll save money, thereby reducing the over-all cost of your green power conversion

3) You get the satisfaction of saying "I did it myself!"

Disadvantages 1) You may not get it right the first time
2) Less variety of materials with which to construct your Blades

Buying them Pre-Made:

Advantages 1) The blades are professionally made

2) Bigger variety of materials to choose from

3) No worry of mistakes in construction

Disadvantages 1) Blades may be not be right for you windmill

2) Expensive - as much as $1,000 or more

*Note: you can buy blades on e-Bay for cheaper

If you do decide to go the way of building your blades yourself, I really suggest you take the time to learn bout the top 3 wind power conversion guides. You can do so here. The top pick specifically, has recently added a video that teaches this topic.

If you make sure to follow a professionally written guide, taking the time to properly design your blades to fit your application, you can ensure that you end up with well constructed windmill which will serve you for years to come!
