Flip Ultra HD Review

I remember when the Flip video camcorders first came out and were a bit of a sensation. They obviously did their research and found an incredibly large gap in the market for an easy to use, small, practical, lightweight camcorder. Well, they’ve certainly filled that gap now and are still continuing to upgrade their product range. This is the latest incarnation and you’ll see in this Flip Ultra HD Review that it really does meet expectations.

For anyone out there who haven’t seen one of these before, this is a movie camera that is about size, simplicity and convenience. It slips easily into your pocket and is ready to point and record in an instant. Just press the red button and start filming – it couldn’t be any easier than that. No lugging around bulky camera bags and accessories, it’s all there ready to go and this is why they’ve caught on in such a big way.

My partner and I have 2 of these devices – the Mino and the UltraHD – so it has been easy for me to make a side-by-side comparison, and although I have to say that I was more than satisfied with the Mino (I still am), the UltraHD version really is a step up. It has everything that the original has but the picture quality is stunning, especially when you consider that the size of the lens in devices this small are comparatively tiny.

The image quality does suffer slightly in poor lighting conditions but unless you’re using a top pro-level camera you’ll find that this goes with the territory. There is an image stabilization feature which seems to work very well, although I’ve always been a bit wary of using any options that ‘adjusts’ image quality.

My partner also has a JVC camcorder, and although she was quite happy with the results, porting the video footage to a computer and getting it to open in a video editing program was a nightmare. The Flip handles this with ease. I was really surprised to read in some Amazon reviews that one or two people had had problems with this but I don’t understand why. It’s just easy peasy.

The Flip Video UltraHD is designed to plug directly into the USB port on your computer without the need for a cable. If that does prove to be a problem (unlikely) because of the location of the USB port on your computer, you can buy a USB cable quite cheaply these days.

You recharge the battery by plugging the Flip Ultra HD into your computer and it charges via the USB port. It’s always difficult to give an accurate battery charge life but I estimate that we get nearly 2 hours of recording per charge out of ours. You can use 3 AAA batteries as a back up in an emergency but they won’t last very long.

I love this video camera. It's just so well designed and easy to use that you can spend your time creating great video footage anytime, anywhere, without any of the hassle often experienced when using the more conventional video cameras.
