Everyone who has made the effort to dye their hair a different colour has probably at some point been less than thrilled with the results. What looks great on the box or in the picture, may not look so fabulous next your your own skin tone or eye colour.

If you've had your hair coloured or tinted at a salon, by all means, go back and see if they will fix it for you. Sometimes your hair colour just needs a couple days to settle down and lose some of the brassiness. If this is the case, there are colour enhancing shampoos that can help remedy the situation. These shampoos are specialised for blondes, redheads and dark or medium brunettes and will aid in bringing about the pigment you desire.

If the colour itself is just all wrong, you can try lightening or darkening it with another colour. Be sure to read the labels on the box if you are doing it yourself. If your colour has too much redness or seems to have an orange glow, look for an ashy toned hair dye. Warm colours, described as golden or honey often have red undertones, where as ash colours use white undertones.

If you have tinted your hair a dark shade, you should probably try a colour stripping product or a lightener. This will remove a great deal of the dark hair dye. You can also try applying a few highlights or lowlights to balance out the colour. Sometimes dark hair looks overwhelming simply because it lacks texture. Highlights and lowlights are available in many shades from blonde to red to brown and can add some subtle depth and light to single coloured hair.

You should always wait a few days between colourings, washing your hair frequently to give the dye time to settle. Hair is the most vivid right after you colour it, and as with all new looks, you may just need some time to get used to it yourself.

If all else fails, get a bleaching formula. A bleaching formula will strip all the colour from your hair, leaving it a stark white blonde, and you can add a new colour afterwards. This is time consuming and a little costly, but if you are truly unsatisfied with the colour of your hair, you can start fresh.
