There's no doubt there are many advantages to owning a swimming pool. A swimming pool can provide exercise, socialization, and relaxation. It is a beautiful addition to any back yard sanctuary. But most importantly, when it gets to be a really hot day, a swimming pool can be a real life saver. There is nothing more refreshing or more relaxing on a super hot day, than a cool dip in a clean refreshing swimming pool. However, an improperly cared for swimming pool can become a real nightmare.

One of the problems with maintaining a clean refreshing pool is the time and cost to for proper upkeep. Significant amounts of both money and time are required to properly care for a swimming pool. It doesn't matter whether you have an above ground pool or an inground pool, you will have to do regular maintenance on it.

A responsible swimming pool owner must insure that their pool is safe and clean. It is your responsibility to do so, not only yourself, but anyone else who uses your swimming pool. The good news is, maintaining your swimming pool doesn't have to be overly time consuming or labor intensive if you do your homework and learn to do it properly. By performing regular maintenance on your swimming pool you will keep it at optimum swimming conditions year round, depending on your climate. One thing any experienced pool owner knows is heat is always a factor. The more heat, the more maintenance required to keep the pool clean. In contrast, colder climates and or locations may have more trees and vegetation which translates to more junk in the pool. This is also a factor.

Two of the biggest factors which will govern the condition of your swimming pool water are: Frequency of swimming pool use and the weather outside. Without the proper balance of chemicals, the sun can negatively affect your swimming pool water. Your swimming pool water can turn your water an algae green. As we said, the sunnier the climate you live in, the more you're going to have to pay attention to your swimming pool water chemical balance.

Here are 5 easy tips on keeping your pool clean and safe year round.

1 - Pool Chemistry
Well-balanced pool water is important to create a healthy pool and prolong the life of pool equipment. Keep chlorine tablets or sticks in the chlorine reservoir at all times, shock the pool on a regular basis, and add balancing chemicals when appropriate. It is essential that you check your pool chemical balance at least twice a week (or more if the pool is heavily used) using a quality chemical testing kit such as OTO or others.
2 - Preventing Algae

Algae are microscopic organisms that start off invisible to the naked eye, and, without the proper maintenance will grow and cause cloudy pool water. Always visually inspect the pool at least twice a week and insure that you have sufficient chlorine to suppress algae growth. If algae begins to form use a quality algaecide immediately to control it. If you let if grow out of control, it becomes much more harmful to your filtering system
3 - Proper pH and TA
Pool water can be unsafe if the pH is too low or too high. Test this twice a week as well (more if the pool is heavily used) Proper ph will affect both water clarity and swim ability as improper PH can cause skin irritation
4 - Calcium
For fiberglass or other fixed liner type pools, calcium keeps the pool's liner flexible. Low calcium levels can lead to a brittle liner, so it's important to balance calcium levels.
