If there was any area of consumer electronics that just keeps on exploding it's the pocket size camera industry. You can probably guess that there is a lot of competition among the many manufacturers of this device. Consumers like you can reap the rewards of this competition. The competition drives the development of new technology which creates advanced features, benefits, and innovations. So today we're going to talk about this ultra cool market for the best pocket size cameras including some reviews of particular models.

First we'll turn our attention to the Casio Exilim Z1050 which has a very small dimensional profile. It was one of the slimmest of its kind and is still competitively ultra-thin. This 10 megapixel digital camera has both style and excellent features for the camera enthusiast. The fact that the camera is easy to use may very well be the most desirable feature it has to offer. Some people just aren't interested in attempting to sift through a complex users manual in order to learn how to operate a camera. Some people just want something simply they can easily charge the battery with and then are able to point and click for great photos. Not only does this camera feature 3x zoom but it also offers stabilization so that shaking hands are not a problem. The next camera up for review is Canon's PowerShot SD870 IS. There are not a lot of differences over the SD850 IS camera, but there are some attractive cosmetic differences, though. There is an increase from 8 to 8.3 megapixels and the LCD display is slightly larger being 3 inches rather than 2.5. There is, however, a new image processor, the Digic III, plus advanced face detection technology, as well. Autofocus is able to work with the face detection feature to detect as many as nine faces at once. There is an updated controller pad for this model that offers more ergonomically and is more responsive.

If you're looking for something that is less specialized and has more of an overall application, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 is a great option. This in spite of relatively lacking jpeg processing ability, but you won't be disappointed with the photos you shoot. This camera comes with a 3 inch TFT LCD display and has 10.1 megapixel resolution. The LX5 is Panasonic's follow up model to their super successful DMC-LX3 model. Panasonic had to work hard to improve upon the LX3.

We've found the improvements are not massive. The LX5 has a sensor that is about 30% more sensitive than the LX3. The LX5 also use a higher index for color rendering on the LCD, in addition to the LED back lighting for improved color. And there are a few of the lower end pocket size cameras. These cameras would work well to test out if you've never used a digital ultra compact camera. Reasonably priced, these cameras can produce decent quality pictures.
