The dawn of commercial cinema with the focus on entertaining the people happened in 1970s and is usually regarded as the starting point for contemporary Hindi cinema and the trend continues in today's Indian movie industry. Although some directors such as Govind Nihilani and Shyam Benegal continued to make artistic movies, the total number of commercial movies produced were much more than the artistic ones.

The trend of massive commercialization of Indian cinema continued in 1980s and 1990s. Numerous movies in 1980s like Maine Pyar Kiya, Kayamat se Kayamat Tak, and Tezaab, and movies in 1990s such as Baazigar and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge were young love stories and went on to become great hits. These mushy romantics were mostly love stories of young couples who end up living happily ever after. Some of these romantic movies were very big hits and broke box office records.

The trend of making love stories continued in the latter part of 1990s and early part of 2000s with hit romantic movies such as Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. But, the later half of 1990's saw the re-emergence of artistic cinema and movies such as Satya and Chandni Bar got substantial appreciation from the critics. These new Indian movies were a welcome break from the romantics that were releasing every week and left deeper impressions on minds of Indian cinema audience.

The discouraging performance of recent big budget Bollywood movies like Veer and Mein aur Mrs Khanna and unexpected success of shoestring budget movies like Dev D has set the new age Hindi movie directors and producers wondering.

The current trend in the Indian movie industry is to experiment with the themes and storylines. Recent movies like My Name is Khan and Three Idiots, which had novel story lines proved to be big hits. The modern Indian movies are bringing in a fresh new unique wave of cinema, which is being heartily welcomed by the Indian cinema audience.
