August the 16th 2009 was a monumental date for many people worldwide. It marked the 40th anniversary of The King's death. It was marked throughout the world in many different ways. As any good Elvis Presley biography will tell you, at 3.30pm on the 16th of August 1969, Elvis was pronounced dead on arrival at the Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis.

When the news that Elvis Presley had died reached the people, they mourned en mass outside his home, Graceland.

Today, hundreds of Elvis impersonators pay their respects by visiting Graceland and Elvis' final resting place. Dedicated fans hold candle lit vigils throughout the night and his music is remembered and frequently re released to help The King's messages transcend throughout the generations.

So, why is the anniversary of the death of Elvis still so poignant and important today? Elvis was more than just a singer; he was a legend and is still the inspiration behind many of today's music stars. The reason as to why he is still worshipped and respected today is that he was a rebel, who created a new path for music and for the possibility of idol worship.

Without the trailblazer that The King was, we would not have a music industry like we do today. Many of the super rich and wealthy singers should be thankful that decades earlier this young man with the suggestive dancing allowed for the path to be created. Any Elvis Presley biography website or book will astonish you with the achievements of this music icon.

The anniversary of Elvis' death is still relevant today as many of his fans still look to Elvis as the first and greatest rock n roll singers. He inspired hair styles, fashion and music for generations to come and many feel if they do not pay their respects to The King then this would not be acknowledging the legend nor thanking him for all that he brought to the world.

On the anniversary of Elvis' death many make the pilgrimage to his previous home. The fact that they call this trip a pilgrimage clearly dictates their passion and dedication to The King, seeing the date as important as that as a religious event.

Make sure to get your hands on a good Elvis Presley biography, sit down with a cup of your favourite beverage, and enjoy a great read about an amazing man and music icon, who will be "the King" forever in our hearts.

There is no doubt that every year the death of this great and well loved singer will be remembered and recognised by the fans of the singer, but also the rest of the world will too pay their respects to this legend. Even those who did not or do not care for his music cannot deny the impact that this one man had on the music industry and on the hearts of millions across the globe.

Whether it is the music, the youth, the rebel, the trailblazer or the fame that draws a gasp of admiration from you, there is no denying that The King of rock and roll will live on through his music and in the hearts of many.
