Are there evenings when you feel that your baby's sleeping patterns will never be regulated? Can you imagine a time when your baby will sleep long enough for the two of you to feel refreshed and rested? Parents know that there is no way to avoid the occasional night in the nursery rocker, but how can we keep those nights with baby sleeping very little or not at all to a bare minimum?

So exactly how do you get a baby to sleep through the night? First, manage your expectations. Every baby is different. Every family is different. So the method that worked for me may not work for you, and vice versa.

And what worked for your first child may not work for a second one either. I hate to break it to you, but just because you've already had one kid doesn't mean that you've got parenting all figured out. EVERY kid is different, even when it comes to sleep.

At first, the need to feed outweighs the need to sleep. Many pediatricians suggest that parents do not allow their newborn to sleep too long without feeding. In other words, they suggest that you feed your baby every three to four hours. You may even need to do so more often if your baby is smaller or was born premature. Infants that are breastfed will become hungry more quickly than those who are bottle-fed.

When you are sleep deprived and can hardly keep your eyes open the last thing you want to hear is that you will have to wait a year or more for relief. Some desperate moms have even questioned why there are sleeping pills for grownups and no baby sleeping aids or remedies. I believe in the natural approach to parenting whenever possible, but I have to admit succumbing to panic due to exhaustion myself.

For an infant, establishing a daily routine to include set nap times will contribute a great deal towards getting your baby to sleep through the night. Your baby must be taught that short periods of sleep are for daytime and longer periods of sleep are for night time.

Every mother's process for relaxing her baby is unique, there is no definite set of rules for what should be involved. Whatever your baby sleeping routine works out to be; stick to it. Try not to vary from it from day to day. The best way to an ideal baby sleep routine, relies on mom having a routine.

You will have a calmer and more confident child if you are so predictable that baby always knows exactly what happens next.Develop routines that work for you and your baby. Try setting up your day in a way that leads toward you and baby sleeping through the night. Try giving your baby a routine so that he or she will know it's time to settle down. Both types of routine are great techniques that can get you a bit closer to solving the baby sleep problem in your house!
