Earth Day History And Some Activities That Can Make A Difference

What's Earth Day?

Earth Day was founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson on April, twenty-two 1970. He was worried about the growing environmental crisis and tried to make it a known and debated issue. Beginning as an environmental teach-in in Philadelphia on April 16 lasting until April twenty-two, with no official ruling body, it grew at the grassroots level to a global day of environmental awareness.

At the first Earth Day in Fairmont Park, Philadelphia attendees included ; Senator Edmund Muskie ( author of the Clean Air Act, 1970 ), Ralph Nader, Ian McHarg Landscape designer, George Wald a Nobel prize-winning Harvard Biochemist, Senate Minority Leader Hugh Scott and poet Allen Ginsberg. Since then, regular people like me and you, celebrities and congressmen have thrown themselves into expressing the issues of environmentally aware actions including recycling, energy conservation and reducing and / or reusing dispensable items. Becoming a world effort to save our world, Earth Day became a global firm with a ruling body to assemble activities and ideas.

While many people support Earth Day, there are feedback. Some say that Earth Day has come to designate the marginalization of environmental protection, and the celebration of itself has outlived its utility, writer Alex Steffen. In a May fifth Washington Times editorial Arbor Day was compared to Earth Day as Arbor Day being a very content, non-political party of trees, whereas Earth Day was a gloomy, political ideology that portrayed humans in a negative light. Peter Foster from Junk Science claims that Earth Day was conceived in counter-culture hysteria and has developed as a focus for ideological opposition to industrialized society and cites the volcanic eruption in Iceland as evidence mother nature does what she pleases and that includes polluting.

When you look at it, Earth Day has some vehement adherents and vehement critics. Either way they both have a point. We are stewards of this planet and we can make some fairly big messes, on the other hand the planet can make some massive messes of its own that we have no power to manage. Feeling guilty about how you live your life is not any way to live ; that includes how you handle the environment. We shouldn't feel guilted or be forced into trying new concepts to keep our planet clean. We should want to do what small we are able to to try and leave a better place for generations yet to come factoring in what we haven't any control of. Deciding the merits of Earth Day is a private call.

At the very least bringing to the forefront awareness of the harmful chemicals used in several of our everyday products is a good thing. This has created a massive commercial vacuum that companies are rushing to fill. Taking the green approach to packing and making their products, firms have jumped on the bandwagon of ecologically friendly products. Keeping noxious ingredients out of our cleaning and everyday products will go a great distance to help the environment and our family's health.
