Dance- The Hollywood Style

Some of the best Hollywood flicks have their plots based on Dance. These movies have inspired generations to follow their heart. Dance holds in itself the potential to release and make you soar higher than you ever knew you could. These movies have also inspired the fashion industry over the ages by bringing dance apparels, dance shoes, dance accessories into vogue. Dance clothes store and dance shops have seen a surge in business as an effect of these movies.

Dance classes and dance camps can make use of these films to showcase the passion for the art to young aspirants and also to learn from some of the breathtaking performances on screen. Some of the legendary movies based on dance are - The Red Shoes (1948), Dirty Dancing (1987), save the last Dance (2000), Shall We Dance? (2004), Step Up (2006).

The Red Shoes, a 1948 film was a classic with dance editing far ahead of its time. It was directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, starring Moira Shearer. It intricately weaves backstage life with the thrill of performance. This film centers on the dilemma of a young ballerina torn between the composer who loves her and the impresario determined to fashion her into a great dancer. The Red Shoes is a British feature film about ballet, written, directed and produced by the team of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, known collectively as The Archers.

The 1987 flick Dirty Dancing is based on club/performance partner dancing made in the United States. Written by Eleanor Bergstein and directed by Emile Ardolino, the film features Patrick Swayze, Jennifer Grey, Cynthia Rhodes, and Jerry Orbach. The story is a coming of age drama that documents a teenaged woman's rebellion against her father by starting a relationship with a dance instructor during a family summer vacation. Almost a third of the film involves dancing scenes choreographed by Kenny Ortega (later famous for High School Musical), and the finale has been described as "the most Goosebumps-inducing dance scene in movie history".

Save the Last Dance, released in 2000, starring Julia Stiles as a girl who wants to study as a professional dancer. It is a romantic drama film produced by MTV Films, directed by Thomas Carter. The film stars Julia Stiles and Sean Patrick Thomas as a teenage interracial couple in Chicago who work together to help the main character, played by Stiles, train for a dance audition. A direct-to-video sequel, Save the Last Dance 2, was released in 2006.

In the popular 2006 movie Step Up, the male lead is a street dancer. It is a dance/romance film directed by Anne Fletcher starring Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan. Set in Baltimore, Maryland, the film follows the tale of the disadvantaged Tyler Gage (Channing Tatum) and the privileged modern dancer Nora Clark (Jenna Dewan), who fined themselves paired up in a showcase that determines both of their futures.
