It is a part of the film making process that encapsulates all stages of production occurring after the actual end of shooting and/or recording the completed work. It includes many different processes that are brought together, and involves; editing the picture / television program Writing, rerecording and editing the soundtrack. During post production, visual special effects may also be added mainly by computer generated imagery (CGI) and digital copy from which release prints will be made (although this may be made obsolete by digital cinema technologies). It also involves the input of sound design, sound effects, ADR, Foley and Music, culminating in a process known as sound re-recording or mixing as well as the transfer of film to video or data with a telecine and color grading.
Typically, the post-production phase of creating a film takes longer than the actual shooting of the film, and can take several months to complete. Film editing is an integral part of the post production process and involves the selection and combining of shots into sequences, and ultimately creating a finished motion picture. It is often said to be an art of storytelling. It is unique to cinema, and when it is well-practiced, the viewer can become so engaged that he or she is not even aware of the editor's work. This is part of the reason it is often also known as the invisible art. Basically, film editing is the art, technique, and practice of assembling shots into a coherent whole.

A film editor is a person who practices film editing by assembling the footage. In actual fact, the editor's job involves much more than the mere and mechanical joining together of pieces of a film together, cutting off film slates, or editing dialogue scenes, but transcends the physical actions to encompass an ability to visualize the concept behind the story and put it to his audience via film. The editor must creatively work with the layers of images, story, dialogue, music, pacing, as well as the actors' performances to effectively "redirect" and even rewrite the film to craft a cohesive whole. Editors usually play a dynamic role in the making of a film.
Digital editing has recently introduced a new breed of specialist editors, for instance picture editors whose job it is to deal with specifically pictures. Equally, the work of sound, musk and more recently, visual editors is cut out in their various niches.
