The Government museum at Egmore is a confluence of architecture and education. It was inaugurated in 1851 and till date has been attracting people from all around the world. Built on approximately 16 acres, it comprises six buildings and 46 galleries dedicated to various fields. The main building has departments of zoology, geology, botany, numismatics and archaeology. The front building has anthropological artefacts and archaeology again, and then comes the bronze gallery with chemical conservation, numismatics and archaeology again followed by Contemporary Art gallery, National Art gallery and Children's museum.
