Cell phones - How the Wireless Industry has changed.

Cell phones have changed the way we live and the way we communicate. Yet just fifteen years ago it was rare to see someone with a cell phone. In fact the introduction to wireless phones was with what was then called a car phone, as it needed to attach to the cigarette lighter to work.
2G cell phones (Second Generation) were introduced in 1991 as large brickle phones. It wasn't until the tiny 100-200g hand held cell phones hit the scene that we began to see more and more people with them. These phones were battery operated and with more and more cellular towers popping up, transmissions could reach further and further with uninterrupted service. The new millennium saw the 3G (Third Generation) cell phones make their appearance main stream. It took cellular phone service 37 years to finally become an every day item.

Today there are more than 60 million cell phone users and the industry has grown to a $30 billion dollar per year industry. Today you can do almost everything with you phone. To even call it a phone anymore is only based on the fact that we use it for phone calls, but that is really not even that main use of the device any more.
The communication method of choice with cell phones, that even surpasses phone calls, is text messaging (SMS). More people prefer to communicate with friends, family, co-workers and clients via text messaging. The need to exchange pleasantries and make small talk, before the reason for the call is revealed, is not necessary with text messaging. You can get right to the point, get your message across, get an answer that you need, make plans, etc. sometimes much quicker than making a phone call. There are short hand writing styles that have become a language of their own. BRB (be right back), TTYL (talk to you later), and BTW (by the way), are all text messaging short hand that anyone who texts more than once per day, knows and uses. In fact you can communicate with two or more people at the same time with text messaging.

Along with text messaging we use our cell phones to take pictures, store them and send them via MMS or email. We can also shoot, store and share video, receive and send email, record calendar events, take notes, surf the net, store and play music, navigate roads, find restaurants, and more! With customized ring tones that can be assigned to specific callers, text messages and emails, we know who is calling, texting or emailing without even looking at the phone.
Cell phones have come a long way and continue to develop. Soon there will be 4G and who knows that those will entail.
