Social networking sites have been getting the heat for exposing teens to dangerous predators. Recently we've all found out that MySpace banned over 90,000 registered sex offenders from its site, to protect its users. It's reassuring that MySpace is being responsible and doing its job. We should probably take a moment to acknowledge other positive influences social networking has had on teen culture. Many otherwise lonely, misunderstood kids have gained the exposure necessary to escape the narrow confines or small towns and unsupportive families. Some have found true friends, confidantes and even saviors.

The story that comes to mind involves a 22-year-old New Jersey man becoming friends with a California teenager. After about a month of online conversations, the teen revealed during a webcam session that he is cutting himself and is considering suicide. It was an obvious cry for help, and the older man who has had some youth mentoring experience, did the right thing. Luckily, he knew the kid's real full name and knew he was from Sacramento. He was able to find the boy's address, phone number and other contact information through a Cell Phone Lookup. Then, he called Sacramento police and told them where to find his troubled friend. The police immediately visited the boy's home, and found him alive, albeit covered in cuts. They arranged for proper crisis treatment and had him transferred to safety.

This kid was lucky to find a friend capable of compassion and quick thinking, who used proper technology to save his life. Luckily, they found each other on MySpace; luckily, the older friend had heard of reverse phone directories and located this confused teen through a Cell Phone Lookup.
