Celebrity news: Has Kim Kardashian flushed away her remaining credibility?

As American’s most notorious party girl, it’s often said that Kim Kardashian would turn up to the opening of an envelope. However, the US celebrity gossip fixture – known for appearances in reality shows such as Keeping Up With the Kasdashians – may have flushed away what little credibility she has left with her latest public appearance.

The star recently turned up in Times Square in New York to open – wait for it – a public toilet. Loo roll brand Charmin called in the 30-year-old to open the door to the conveniences and then pose with a pair of its mascot bears – surely a career low for someone usually so keen to be seen out at the right places with the right people.

Kardashian’s frankly bizarre appearance has got us thinking about other strange and embarrassing celebrity appearances over the years – here’s a few of our favourites:

The late King of Pop made a surprise visit to Exeter City FC in 2002 after being invited by his spoon-bending friend – and co-chairman of the team - Uri Gellar. Appearing alongside magician David Blaine, fans of the lowly football club probably thought the sight of the King of Pop was all part of a conjuring trick, as he took to the stage to give a speech on a truly bizarre day for fans of the lowly Devon club.

The university’s famous debating society has invited many of the great and the good to speak over the past century, from Winston Churchill and the Dalai Lama to science boffin Stephen Hawking. Quite why the queen of mindless celebrity news Kerry Katona was invited to join this illustrious lineage last year is anyone’s guess – unless the students simply wanted to know about the latest deals on baked beans and pizzas at Iceland.

Look away, kids! Katy Perry on Sesame Street
Granted, there’s nothing strange about a hot celeb appearance on this kids’ TV staple – everyone from Michelle Obama to Julia Roberts has pitched up on America’s favourite street. But Katy’s choice of outfit during her scheduled appearance earlier this year – a revealing green dress - was certainly a bit odd.

The singer – known for pre-school-friendly tunes such as I Kissed A Girl – appeared alongside cheery muppet Elmo to perform a clean version of her track Hot N Cold. A preview posting of the skit on YouTube led to a flood of complaints from parents riled by her plunging neckline – and the producers promptly cut the segment from the show.
